Born in San Clemente, California, Jim Murray grew up primarily in the canyon country of southeastern Utah and western Colorado. Throughout his education, art was undoubtedly the one school subject he always passed with flying colors, as well as flying shades, hues, lines, values, and textures. However, it was in his other classes where young Murray learned the important practical applications of art when he discovered that by including fancy illustrations in an essay, he could achieve a higher grade on what was otherwise substandard work. Additionally, on more than one occasion Jim was able to bribe a teacher for a passing grade by offering to do special class-related art projects.

In 2001, Jim Murray moved to Japan where he is actively making a living at his other creative passion, music.

When he's not behind the piano painting soundscapes for Tokyo audiences, he can usually be found in his home studio with a paintbrush in hand, or just as often, out roaming around creation in search for his next painting subject.
